The Complete Set Induction for Primary Science

Subject: Science

Primary 5. Topic: Flowers.

Unit Goals: 1. To let the students know about the shoot system of a plant.

2.To let them know that flowers are living things.

3. To let them be familliar with local flowers

Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1.List the parts of flowers.

2.Label and identify parts of flowers

3.Identify the functions of the parts of flowers.

Materials: -Diagram/picture of a flower -Textbooks -Videos -real flowers. -Interactive whiteboard -Lap top -OHP Projector

For the Hook, Teacher can show the students a real flower into the classroom, e.g Hibiscus flower. Ask the students about the flower. Do they know about the flower? The name of the flower? Where can they find it? and so on. Teacher continues asking question about the flower to arouse the students’ curiousity about the flower and ask them to abserve it. After 5 minutes, then teacher relate the discussion into the content of the lesson for that day. Other than that, Teacher can simply show pictures of video slides about the different kinds of flowers to the students. After the show, the teacher can ask the students about the video that they have watched. Do they recognise any of the flowers? Where can they usually see them? And so on.

During exploration, In order for the students to explore new concepts, teacher divide the students into small groups where they can work together. Each group are given one sample flower to be observed. Teacher ask the students to observe what they can see from the given flower. At the same time the teacher describe and explain the parts of the flower. Flower diagram are provided at the whiteboard and teacher label the parts of the flower. After describing one part of the flower (e.g. petals), teacher can show the petals of the flower to the students. Students can record, write and label the parts of the flower in their exercise book.

The Complete Set Induction for Primary Maths

Maths Level: Primary 1

Topic: Addition and Subtraction

Unit Goals: 1. To let the students know how to subtract and add

2. To let the students solve the operations individually.

3. To let the students be able to add and subtract numbers in tens up to 100 and maybe even higher.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1.Identify the functions of the operations.

2. Solve the Equations on additon and subtractions correctly.

3. Place the numbers according to the correct place values.

4. Develop pupils’ number sense.

Materials that will be needed: -Realia (marbles, comics, abacus, place value teaching aid) -Manilla card -Worksheets -Powerpoint slides -games -prices of familiar things -distances like in running race and so on.

As for the hook, set induction for maths (additon and subtraction). Teaching children the basic computation is no easy job. Children are easily intrigued when they are interested in something or when they can remember something that is fun. For the set induction, we would tell the class a story on how a young boy wants to buy something in a market and he only has $10 with him. The first item he bought cost him $3 and the 2nd item he bought caused him $3.50. He wanted to buy this lollipop that caused $3 but he isn’t sure if the money he have left would be enough. Then after we finished telling the story, we will tell them why it is important to know how to add and subtract and let them get the picture on what is additon and subtraction. After that then we start to introduce what is additon and subtraction.

Exploration means the students have to have a hands-on experience to better the understanding and to stimulate the learning experience of the children on additon and subtraction. After the set induction, the teacher will give a few more explanation regarding the topic as well as give examples on how students could apply the addition and subtraction. The teacher would give a few questions on the board and the students will be asked to solve the questions by using the teaching aids provided. This will consist of blocks, lego toys (that can be connected), marbles, sweets and etc. Questions will be like ” Ali bought 5 sweets from the market. Ahmad gave him 2 more sweets after that. how many sweets does ali have altogether?” Studnets will tehn have to use the sweets provided and compute the questions in order to get the answer. Other than that, exploration could be in the form of games. How about subtraction bowling? Make pins from 1 liter soda bottles. Students take turns bowling and writing the subtraction equation. 9 pins, 4 hit: 9 – 4 = 5 Give each bowler 2 turns. So the second turn would be 5 pins, 2 hit: 5 – 2 = 3

Drawing and Writing Tasks in Primary Sc and Math

Students gives their most attention to a lesson when they are involved in the lesson; hands-on task. Drawing and writing tasks for math and science are examples of hands-on activities. Such tasks will enable students to be more attentive as well as it motivates the students and makes the learning more effective.

In science subject, there are lots of topics that teachers could give that can involve drawing and writing tasks. Some of the examples are, flowers or plants. Students can be asked to draw their favourite flower that they know of or flowers that can be found in Brunei. Students may be asked to label the parts of the flowers and write afew sentences about its functions.

As for Math, topics like shapes or numbers can be used to have such activities. Students may be asked to draw the different shapes that they have learned that day and may even colour the shapes. Numbers could also be drawn and students could write down the spelling of the numbers drawn.

Portfolios for lower primary math pupils & SBA in SPN 21

The uses of portfolio, both manually and e-portfolio can benefit the students as both area compilation of their exercises that includes their classwok and homework. This includes the assessments in class as well. Students can always look back to their portfolio to see how they have improved overtime. The exercises that can be given to the students for them to keep it in their portfolio, psychologically, or in terms of working with their mind, are exercises that includes physical.

For example, for primary 1 students, teacher can conduct a game that has to with inserting the numbers in the correct place. ( those carpets like toy that has numbers that are removable). This game can help the primary 1 students recognise the shape of the numbers as well as the name of the number. this then could be given a worksheet to let them recognise the numbers as well as the spelling of the numbers. The other exercise that teacher could give are using real objects. This could be in terms of counting books, to teach them addition, or even counting of small objects or even subtracting small objects to teach them subtraction. With games or activities like this, the students are able to label the correct numbers as well as the spelling and also the students are able to learn the basic algebra which is addition, if they remember how they were taught using addition of the books or small objects.

Making your job easier with microsoft Excel

I’m sure most of you know how we teachers-to-be will eventually come to that stage in life where most of our work concentrates on grading, marking, adding the total scores of our students, finding the average scores of the class, the average scores of the school and to see the statistics of he grades, whether it is falling or rising. But of course these things are not the highlights of our future careers right. Yes, some might go to the troubles of listing them scores down, then calculate it manually using a calculator or using the computer to do it for you one by one but with the use of Microsoft Excel you can save much time and carry on with your other work. Because using this method save you time and gets your job done faster.

Say you want to calculate the average scores of your students in your class (figure 1)

To find the average scores they get for each subject all you have to do is:

on the subjects columns, on the row that reads average type in =AVG( (highlight the row that you want to find the average) ) then press enter . figure below shows the example.

after pressing enter, the average of the numbers will then appear. To find average, you can also use another method and not entering what was instructed earlier, by doing the following.

1-press the function button as shown

2-you will find this box to appear, just select average and press ok

3- make sure you click on the columns of the subjects you want to find the average before clicking the f button.

with these functions, not only you can use to find the average of numbers but you can also use to find the sum, statistics and etc. All you have to do is choose the term you want to look for just after clicking the f button

I hope this brief explanation has help you understand how you can use more with excels and not just mere tables and rows in when using Microsoft excels.

Is sharing about web cameras sharing your ict skills? Cause if it isn’t since I bet most people who owns a lap top or desktop with internet access would know how to use one. So if it isn’t I have yet to find an ICT skill that I know to share with my fellow freinds in order to get that grade A Dr Leong promised
